1818/7 Small 8 O-102a 50c Bust Half Dollar AU53 NGC
Add an impressive early American overdate variety to your collection with this 1818/7 Small 8 Capped Bust Half Dollar, Overton O-102a, professionally certified and graded AU53 by NGC. Struck more than two centuries ago, this historic half dollar combines strong remaining detail with the added appeal of a recognized die variety.
Designed by John Reich, the obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a cap secured by a band inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by 13 stars. The date displays the collectible 1818/7 overdate, created when an 1818-dated die was prepared using a previously punched 7 beneath the final digit. The Small 8 style and O-102a Overton attribution further identify this particular die marriage and state.
The reverse features a heraldic eagle with a shield on its chest, clutching arrows and an olive branch beneath a scroll bearing E PLURIBUS UNUM, with 50 C. below. Capped Bust Half Dollars are especially popular with variety specialists, who use the Overton attribution system to identify individual obverse and reverse die pairings.
Graded AU53 by NGC, this example retains excellent overall definition with only light circulation wear on the highest points. Considerable design detail remains throughout Liberty, the stars and date, as well as the eagle, shield, lettering, and reverse devices.
With its 1818/7 overdate, Small 8 variety, O-102a attribution, AU53 grade, and NGC certification, this Capped Bust Half Dollar is an outstanding choice for an advanced Bust Half collection, Overton variety set, or collection of early U.S. silver coinage.
