Struck from 90% silver and 10% copper, this historic quarter features the popular one-year Arrows & Rays design, making it an especially interesting choice for U.S. type collectors.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features Liberty seated beside a Union shield inscribed LIBERTY, with an arrow positioned on each side of the date. The reverse displays the heraldic eagle surrounded by a dramatic field of rays, along with the denomination QUAR. DOL.
The arrows and rays were introduced in 1853 to signify a reduction in the quarter's silver weight, helping distinguish the newly adjusted coins from earlier issues. While the arrows continued on subsequent quarters for a short period, the reverse rays were removed after 1853, creating a distinctive one-year subtype.
Graded Very Fine (VF), this example shows moderate circulation wear while retaining strong overall definition. Liberty, the shield, arrows, date, eagle, and portions of the distinctive reverse rays remain clearly recognizable, giving the coin excellent historic character.
