1854 Seated Liberty Half Dollar w/ Arrows - VG Details (Whizzed,Scratched)
Add a distinctive piece of pre-Civil War American silver coinage to your collection with this 1854 Liberty Seated Half Dollar with Arrows in Very Good (VG) Details – Whizzed & Scratched condition. Struck from 90% silver and 10% copper, this historic half dollar represents an important transitional period in U.S. silver coinage.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features Liberty seated on a rock beside a Union shield inscribed LIBERTY, while holding a liberty pole topped with a cap. Most notably, arrows appear on either side of the 1854 date. These arrows were used to identify coins struck under the reduced-weight standard introduced in 1853. Unlike the 1853 issue, the 1854 half dollar retained the arrows but eliminated the rays surrounding the eagle on the reverse.
The reverse features a heraldic eagle with a shield on its chest, clutching arrows and an olive branch, with the denomination HALF DOL. below.
In Very Good (VG) Details condition, this coin exhibits considerable circulation wear while retaining recognizable major design elements. Liberty's figure, shield, date and arrows, reverse eagle, denomination, and portions of the surrounding lettering remain visible.
This example has been designated Whizzed & Scratched. Whizzing refers to mechanical alteration of the coin's surfaces, typically performed in an attempt to create a brighter or more lustrous appearance. The coin also exhibits scratches from previous handling or contact. These impairments prevent the coin from receiving a straight numerical grade but still make it an affordable example of the desirable Arrows at Date subtype.
