1855-O Seated Liberty Half Dollar w/ Arrows - XF
Add an attractive New Orleans Mint silver issue to your collection with this 1855-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar with Arrows in Extremely Fine (XF) condition. Struck from 90% silver and 10% copper, this pre-Civil War half dollar represents an important transitional period in U.S. silver coinage and carries the added appeal of its historic Southern mint origin.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features Liberty seated on a rock beside a Union shield inscribed LIBERTY, while holding a liberty pole topped with a cap. Distinctive arrows appear on either side of the 1855 date, identifying the coin as part of the reduced-weight silver standard introduced in 1853.
The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with a shield on its chest, clutching arrows and an olive branch, with HALF DOL. below. The “O” mintmark, located beneath the eagle, identifies this example as having been struck at the historic New Orleans Mint.
In Extremely Fine (XF) condition, this coin exhibits light circulation wear while retaining considerable original design detail. Liberty's gown, shield, date and arrows, reverse eagle, feathers, lettering, and other major elements remain sharply defined, giving the coin strong eye appeal for a circulated 19th-century issue.
