1857 Seated Liberty Half Dime - VF Details (Whizzed)
Add a fascinating piece of pre-Civil War American silver coinage to your collection with this 1857 Liberty Seated Half Dime in Very Fine (VF) Details condition. Struck from 90% silver and 10% copper, the Half Dime carried a face value of five cents and was one of the smallest silver denominations issued by the United States Mint.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features Liberty seated on a rock beside a Union shield while holding a liberty pole topped with a cap. The reverse displays the denomination HALF DIME surrounded by a wreath, creating the classic design associated with this historic series.
In Very Fine (VF) Details condition, this coin retains moderate overall detail despite circulation wear. Liberty's figure, shield, date, reverse wreath, lettering, and other major design elements remain clearly identifiable.
This example has been designated Whizzed, meaning its surfaces were mechanically altered or polished in an attempt to create a brighter or more lustrous appearance. Whizzing can leave unnatural shine, fine surface lines, or disturbed original surfaces and prevents the coin from receiving a straight numerical grade. Despite this impairment, it remains a genuine and affordable example of a historic 19th-century U.S. silver denomination.
