1865 3 Cent Nickel - XF
Add a fascinating piece of Civil War-era American coinage to your collection with this 1865 Three-Cent Nickel in Extremely Fine (XF) condition. Introduced during the final year of the American Civil War, the Three-Cent Nickel was created to help address a shortage of small change. Struck from 75% copper and 25% nickel, this coin represents the first year of the series, which continued through 1889.
Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. The reverse displays the Roman numeral III surrounded by a decorative wreath, representing the coin's three-cent denomination.
In Extremely Fine (XF) condition, this coin retains sharp design details with only light circulation wear, particularly on Liberty's hair and the higher points of the reverse wreath. Its first-year status, Civil War-era significance, and attractive remaining detail make it an excellent addition to any Three-Cent Nickel collection or historic U.S. coin type set.
