1876-S Trade Dollar - XF Details (Rim Bump, Scratches)
Add a fascinating piece of American trade history to your collection with this 1876-S Trade Dollar in Extremely Fine (XF) Details condition. Struck at the San Francisco Mint from 90% silver and 10% copper, the Trade Dollar was created primarily to facilitate U.S. commerce with China and other Asian markets during the late 19th century, making it one of the most historically distinctive silver dollars issued by the United States.
Designed by William Barber, the obverse features Liberty seated on bales of merchandise, extending an olive branch toward the sea—a design symbolizing America's growing international trade. The reverse depicts a bald eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, along with the inscriptions 420 GRAINS, 900 FINE and TRADE DOLLAR. The "S" mintmark identifies this example as having been struck at the San Francisco Mint.
In Extremely Fine (XF) Details condition, this coin retains strong overall definition with only light to moderate wear on the highest points. Liberty's gown, hair, surrounding elements, and much of the eagle's feather detail remain visible, giving the coin excellent character for a circulated Trade Dollar.
This example has a rim bump and scratches, resulting in its Details designation. These surface issues prevent the coin from receiving a straight numerical grade but provide collectors with a more affordable opportunity to own a well-detailed example of this historic U.S. silver dollar.
