Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features Liberty seated on a rock beside a Union shield inscribed LIBERTY, while holding a liberty pole topped with a cap. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with a shield on its chest, clutching arrows and an olive branch, with the denomination HALF DOL. below. The “S” mintmark beneath the eagle identifies this coin as having been struck at the San Francisco Mint.
In Good (G) condition, this coin exhibits heavy circulation wear, with many of the finer design details worn smooth. The date, Liberty's figure, reverse eagle, denomination, mintmark, and major lettering remain identifiable, giving the coin the authentic character expected from a well-circulated 19th-century silver issue.
