1883 Liberty Head V Nickel No Cents - Fine Details (Cleaned)
Add one of the most recognizable first-year varieties of the Liberty Head Nickel series to your collection with this 1883 Liberty Head “V” Nickel No Cents in Fine (F) Details – Cleaned condition. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, this historic five-cent piece represents the original reverse design used when the Liberty Head Nickel debuted in 1883.
Designed by Charles E. Barber, the obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by 13 stars with the date 1883 below. The reverse prominently displays the Roman numeral V, representing the five-cent denomination, surrounded by an agricultural wreath.
The original 1883 Liberty Nickel was issued without the word “CENTS” on the reverse. Because the denomination was represented only by the Roman numeral V, some examples were famously gold-plated and passed as five-dollar gold pieces. The Mint later modified the design by adding CENTS beneath the wreath, creating the popular No Cents and With Cents varieties of 1883.
In Fine (F) Details condition, this coin exhibits moderate circulation wear while retaining clearly recognizable major design elements. Liberty's portrait, coronet, stars, date, reverse wreath, and Roman numeral V remain identifiable and provide plenty of classic circulated character.
This example has been Cleaned, meaning its original surfaces were altered through a past cleaning. Cleaning may leave hairlines, unnatural brightness, or other surface changes and prevents the coin from receiving a straight numerical grade. Despite this impairment, it remains an affordable example of the historically significant 1883 No Cents variety.
