1883 Liberty Head V Nickel w/ Cents - Circulated Condition
Add one of the most recognizable varieties of the Liberty Head “V” Nickel series to your collection with this 1883 Liberty Head Nickel with Cents in circulated condition. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, this historic five-cent piece comes from the first year of the Liberty Head Nickel series, which continued through 1912.
Designed by Charles E. Barber, the obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty surrounded by 13 stars, with the date 1883 below. The reverse prominently displays the Roman numeral V, representing the coin's five-cent denomination, surrounded by a wreath.
The Liberty Head Nickel made its debut in 1883 without the word CENTS on the reverse. After reports that some pieces had been gold-plated and passed as five-dollar gold coins, the Mint modified the design later that same year by adding CENTS beneath the Roman numeral. This example is the revised “With Cents” variety, making it an interesting piece of early Liberty Nickel history.
