1883 Liberty Head V Nickel w/ Cents - F Details (Cleaned)
Add a historic first-year issue to your collection with this 1883 Liberty Head “V” Nickel with Cents in Fine (F) Details – Cleaned condition. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, the 1883 issue marks the beginning of the Liberty Head Nickel series, which was produced from 1883 through 1912.
Designed by Charles E. Barber, the obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty surrounded by 13 stars, with the date 1883 below. The reverse prominently displays the Roman numeral V, representing five cents, surrounded by a wreath with CENTS added beneath the denomination.
The original 1883 design was issued without the word “CENTS.” After some pieces were gold-plated and passed as five-dollar gold coins, the Mint modified the reverse later in 1883 to include CENTS. This example represents the revised “With Cents” variety, making it an interesting piece from the first year of the series.
In Fine (F) Details condition, the coin retains moderate design definition despite circulation wear. Liberty's portrait, date, stars, reverse wreath, Roman numeral V, and CENTS remain clearly identifiable.
This example has been Cleaned, meaning its original surfaces have been altered through a past cleaning. Cleaning may leave unnatural brightness, hairlines, or other changes to the coin's surface and prevents it from receiving a straight numerical grade. Despite this impairment, it remains an affordable and collectible example of the historic 1883 With Cents variety.
