1883 Shield Nickel - UNC Details
Add a beautiful example of early American nickel coinage to your collection with this 1883 Shield Nickel in Uncirculated (UNC) Details condition. Struck from 75% copper and 25% nickel, the Shield Nickel was the first five-cent coin composed of a copper-nickel alloy and served as the nation's circulating nickel from 1866 through 1883, before being replaced by the Liberty Head Nickel later that same year.
Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse features a bold Union shield symbolizing strength and unity, accented by olive branches and arrows. The reverse displays the denomination 5 CENTS encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies. As the final year of the Shield Nickel series, the 1883 issue holds special appeal for collectors completing a type set or assembling a complete Shield Nickel collection.
