Colonial paper currency originated in 1690 with Massachusetts Bay Colony funding military expeditions. During this period, the British/French still held control over America’s first colonies which eventually led to the American Revolution (1765-1783). In 1775, Continental Currency issued paper currency to finance the war. It wasn’t until 1791 that Alexander Hamilton established the bank of the United States
